ANNUALS FOR SUN

If your garden has six to eight hours of sun a day and fairly decent soil, you can successfully grow hundreds of different flowering annuals. These range from tiny-blossomed specialty petunias that are great in hanging baskets, to tall and showy cut flowers like gladiolus, zinnia, and canna. Some of these sun worshippers can do well in partial shade, too; but don’t expect as much in the way of blooms.

When I’m in the mood for orange and yellow, I plant dwarf marigold and nasturtium. I plant multihued portulaca, snapdragon, and nicotiana for sentimental reasons.

I love the brilliant and unusual colors of dusky-centered osteospermum; the clear pinks and bright whites of cosmos; and the familiar, lipstick-red flowers of geranium (Pelargonium). This is the red, white, pink, or purple “geranium” we so often grow in containers or plant in the garden. I detect a certain sneer in serious gardeners’ attitude towards these geraniums, but I can’t fathom why. This is a plant that comes in vibrant colors, has leaves in a wide variety of shapes and even scents, stands up to wind and heavy rain, produces upright and hanging varieties, and blooms all summer and well into fall if you take a moment every couple of days to snap off the old flowers.
